Ximending, Taipei 西門町, 臺北

Countdown to 2012!!

30 December 2011 board late night bus up to taipei from kaohsiung. Bus from kaohsiung to taipei cost 530NTD with Ubus and the journey takes 5-6 hours. The reason of taking night bus is worry there will be massive jam exiting Kaohsiung and entering Taipei city due to new year eve. It is common for Taiwanese to countdown on every new year eve thus very large crowd is expected in places which held the party.

Arrive taipei main station 0500 in the morning and too early to have anything to do. So just rest and hang around bus station. Then around 0600 start to walk towards Ximending 西門町. Ximending is located at the west of Taipei city and is known as "Harajuku of Taipei" and the "Shibuya of Taipei". This area is known for its shopping district and source of Taiwan fashion and subculture. The whole area are surrounded by pubs, cafes, clubs and theaters.

Before arriving at Ximending shopping district. Walk pass Bo Ai road 博愛路 with whole row of shops selling electronics and camera stuff.

Then come to Zhongshan hall 中山堂‎
and its located beside Taiwan City Police headquarters 臺北市政府警察局.
All the way to the end you can see Taipei north gate 台北府城承恩門

The street looks empty since it is still early morning and all the shop are close. When night comes this whole place will be lively pack with young people for entertainment and hang out with friends. This whole street of Ximending has been change to car free pedestrian shopping area.

Some beggar/ homeless sleeping on the walkway on Ximending.
Cinemapark at further end of Ximending 電影主題公園.
Had breakfast at one of the old shop serving typical Taiwanese breakfast of fried meehoon/ noodles and different kind of pig internal organ soups.
After a filling breakfast walk eastward to The Office of the President or President Palace 總統府. On the way saw many policemen or soldier around. Some are with uniform while some plain cloth with Bluetooth earpieces. In my opinion there might be some soldier base or museum around or they are just petrolling the president office area.

Daan Park 大安森林公園
Across the road of Daan park at Jianguo road 建國路 there is Jianguo holiday flower market 建國假日花市 and Jianguo holiday jade market 建國假日玉花市.

Both the markets are strategically located under the Jianguo South Road overpass. Buyers can purchase flowers, houseplants, trees, plant containers and seeds. Both the market open during weekends and public holidays. Since the time i went is just weeks before chinese new year so there are many people buying flowers and plants to decorate their house.

When i arrive at city hall courtyard, preparation for the night countdown is underway. There are huge stage setup for concert in the middle of city hall courtyard with artist are rehearsing, speaker and lighting check. There are also many barricade setup to block or avoid large crowd at the front, portable toilet are setup everywhere and balloon flew up high to indicate direction and as advertisement.

Since its only 1300 but there are already many people camping or booking places to the front of stage. While its to early for me to hang outside seeing artist rehearsing and the concert will only start at 1800 so i decided to head into Taipei 101 mall to walk around and have my lunch.

X'mas eve, Kaohsiung 高雄

Today 24 Dec and tomorrow is Christmas!!

This is the first year i am away from home during christmas. From the previous weeks leading up to today i have NOT seen any christmas decoration, NO christmas tree, NO christmas sales, NO christmas songs and NO christmas atmosphere at all at Taiwan.

Since this year christmas is on Sunday and christmas eve is on today (Saturday). So i decide to go out and have a look, hoping to see or bump into some places/ churches which will celebrate or will have carols. So i decided to cycle all the way to one of the biggest mall in Taiwan - Dream Mall 夢時代購物中心. I choose to cycle because i can stop by anywhere along the way if there is some event happening. Since Dream mall is the largest shopping mall at Kaohsiung, surely there will have lots of decoration, christmas carol, santa clause, christmas light deco and will have lots of people.

As i cycle along the way from Siziwan 西子灣 - Art pier 2 駁二藝術特區 - Ai he 愛河‎... disappointingly i dont see much people around and no activities going on. So just took some photo of buildings and cycle further on.

Finally after 45 minutes ride i arrive at Dream mall 夢時代購物中心. Having high expectation and high in spirit of hoping to see some christmas atmosphere. the first thing that i see when arrive the parking lots opposite Dream mall is a huge and large stage being set-up and the main road is cut-off of traffic. So i was expecting some big concert tonight leading to counting down of christmas.

So leaving behind the stage where artist rehearsing and went into Dream mall. When i step into the mall, i was surprise to see no decoration at all and the music being play is chinese songs which has nothing to do with christmas/carol. I decide to walk around the shopping mall and hopping to see some deco at the center court where normally small stage or main decoration or the theme/biggest christmas tree will be set-up in most shopping mall (as of what Malaysia and Singapore mall are).
It really pull my spirit down seeing nothing at the center court not even a christmas tree.

Then went for dinner at lovely restaurant, Xinjuejiang 新崛江.
Then decided to go back to Dream mall cause there is concert and expecting to be some grand countdown and fireworks display.
The only deco i saw hanging on the tree!
Some cartoon character in Dream mall

After walking around the mall till closing time at 2200 then decide to go out concert and wait for countdown. Since the weather is cold so was taking shelter in the mall.
Free beer from 7/11 but limited to one small cup/person.

Then at around 2330... The program host mention that the concert will end here. In order to make sure my ear is not hearing wrongly i waited for awhile. Then event organizer call for all the crew to back stage and spotlights is shut... then saw people leaving... by then i was so disappointed. Then i know that Dream mall will not hold any celebration as people are leaving home.

I tell myself, maybe Dream mall is not celebrating but other hotel along Ai he might be setting up fireworks so i quickly cycle to river area. But when i arrive around 2355 and waited till 0015 25Dec. There is still no fireworks and nothing special happening.

This is my saddest Christmas celebration in my life. Taiwan has really disappointed me.
